🚨 Crypto Scams to Avoid: The Complete Warning Guide

📚 Guide · 8 min read · All guides

Why scams target crypto

Crypto payments are instant, global and irreversible — once sent, money is gone forever. Scammers exploit exactly that. Knowing their playbooks is the best defence.

1. Fake signal and "profit" groups

A "trader" adds you on Telegram or WhatsApp, shows screenshots of huge profits, and offers to trade for you — just send crypto to their wallet first. The profits are fake; the wallet is theirs.

Spot it: anyone who trades FOR you or asks you to send crypto to a wallet is a scammer. Real services never handle your funds.

2. Pig butchering (romance + investment)

Scammers build a relationship over weeks, then "reveal" a lucrative investment platform. Victims deposit more and more, see fake growing balances, and can never withdraw. The site looks real — it is not.

Spot it: new relationships that quickly turn to investment talk, "platforms" with no real company behind them, and any pressure to keep depositing.

3. Fake exchanges and fake apps

Lookalike sites (one letter different from the real URL) and fake apps in unofficial stores steal your login or simply take deposits.

Spot it: check the URL bar carefully, only use official app stores, and search the exchange name + "scam" before depositing.

4. Giveaway and celebrity scams

"We're doubling all Bitcoin sent to this address!" — usually from hacked celebrity or company accounts. Real companies never ask you to send money to receive money.

5. Pump-and-dump groups

Groups coordinate a "pump" of a tiny coin, then the organisers sell into your buy. You are the exit liquidity.

Spot it: anyone promising a guaranteed pump is using you as the exit. And in most jurisdictions, coordinated pumping is illegal.

The universal test

Every scam, in every form, needs one thing: you sending crypto to a stranger. Whenever a "trade", "bonus", "verification" or "investment" requires that, it is a scam. Stop, verify through official channels, and ask someone you trust. Also read our security guide for the safe-habits checklist.
