🔐 Crypto Security Guide: Keep Your Coins Safe From Hackers & Mistakes
Security is 90% habits, 10% tools
Almost every stolen coin was lost to a human mistake — a shared password, a fake website, a screenshot of a recovery phrase. The good news: the mistakes are all avoidable with simple habits.
Understand wallets and keys
Your coins live on the blockchain; your private key (or 12–24 word recovery phrase) is the only way to spend them. Whoever holds the phrase owns the coins — that is the entire game.
- Hot wallet: connected to the internet (app or exchange). Convenient for trading; only keep what you need for the short term.
- Cold wallet: offline device (Ledger, Trezor) or a paper backup. For long-term holdings.
- Exchanges: convenient but custodial — they hold your keys. Not your keys, not your coins.
The non-negotiable rules
- Never share your recovery phrase — support will NEVER ask for it. Anyone who does is a scammer.
- Never type your phrase into a website or app, even one that looks official.
- Store the phrase offline on paper — two copies, two places.
- Never screenshot your phrase or store it in cloud notes.
Beat the phishing attempts
Phishing is the #1 crypto crime. Fake exchange sites, fake wallet apps, fake "giveaways" from celebrity accounts, and urgent emails ("your account is frozen — verify now") all steal keys and logins. Defences: bookmark exchange URLs and always check the address; enable 2FA (preferably an authenticator app, not SMS); never install wallet apps from random links — use official app stores; slow down — urgency is a scammer's favourite tool.
Protect your exchange account
Use a unique, strong password. Enable 2FA with an authenticator app. If you run a trading bot, create a separate API key with trading-only permission — never allow withdrawals.
If it feels wrong, it is wrong
Unsolicited "help", guaranteed returns, romance requests, investment groups on Telegram promising double your money — all scams. When in doubt, verify through official channels only. A few minutes of caution protects years of savings.
