🧘 Trading Psychology: Why We Lose and How to Fix It
Your brain is the problem
Losing traders rarely lack information — they lack emotional control. Fear makes you sell bottoms. Greed makes you hold past your target. FOMO makes you chase pumps that are already over. Recognising these patterns is the first real skill of trading.
The four classic self-destructs
- Revenge trading: after a loss you immediately trade bigger to "win it back". This is how accounts die in one afternoon. Rule: after a loss, stop for the day.
- FOMO entries: you watch a coin pump, panic-buy the top, and it corrects. Rule: no chasing green candles. There is always another trade.
- Moving stops: the trade goes against you, so you widen the stop "just this once". Rule: set the stop, respect the stop. A stopped trade costs 1–2%; a moved stop can cost everything.
- Overtrading: boredom trades — opening positions just to feel active. Rule: trade your plan, not your mood.
Build a written plan
Before each trade write: entry level, stop, targets, position size, and the reason. If you cannot write the plan in 30 seconds, the trade is not ready. Plans turn trading from gambling into a process you can review and improve.
Journal every trade
Log each trade with a screenshot and one line on your emotional state. After 30 trades, patterns appear: maybe you lose most on Thursday nights or after a win streak. That data is worth more than any indicator.
Practical discipline habits
- Trade the demo until profitable for a month — no exceptions.
- Set a daily loss limit (e.g. 3% of account) and stop when hit.
- Take breaks. Step away from charts regularly; crypto runs 24/7, you do not.
- Sleep matters — tired traders make desperate decisions.
