⚖️ Bitcoin vs Ethereum: What Is the Difference, Simply Explained
Two different jobs
Bitcoin and Ethereum are often compared as rivals, but they are built for different jobs. Bitcoin is digital money — scarce, secure and simple. Ethereum is a platform for building applications (DeFi, NFTs, tokens) on its blockchain, with Ether (ETH) as the fuel.
Purpose
- Bitcoin: a store of value and payment network. Its design is deliberately conservative — nothing changes fast.
- Ethereum: a programmable network. Developers build apps on top, and ETH pays the "gas" fees to run them.
Supply and money
Bitcoin has a hard cap of 21 million — absolute scarcity. Ethereum's supply is not capped, but it burns a portion of every transaction fee, which can make ETH net-deflationary in busy periods. Bitcoin is scarcer; Ethereum's supply story is more complex.
Technology
Both use proof-of-stake consensus today (Ethereum switched in 2022, cutting its energy use by over 99%). Bitcoin prioritises security and simplicity; Ethereum prioritises flexibility, at the cost of more complexity and upgrade risk.
Ecosystem
Most of the crypto economy — stablecoins, DeFi lending, NFT marketplaces, and thousands of tokens including TEDDY-style community coins — lives on Ethereum and compatible chains. Bitcoin's ecosystem is mostly... Bitcoin.
Which is the better investment?
That depends on your thesis: Bitcoin is the safer, simpler store of value with the longest track record. Ethereum offers more utility and upside potential but more moving parts and risk. Many investors hold both. As always: do your own research, and never invest money you cannot afford to lose.
